Do I have to be a gay man to join PGMC?
No, you do not have to be gay, a man, or from Portland to join PGMC. Any individual who supports our mission may join as a singer or non-singing member. As an organization committed to equality, we believe it is essential to welcome new members regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. We cannot in good conscience oppose discrimination while practicing it.
Do I have to sing to join PGMC?
No, you may join as a non-singing member who assists the organization in a wide range of activities, including performance and administrative support. Non-singing members pay dues the same as singing members.
Do I have to be able to read music to join as a singing member?
While the ability to read music is always welcome, it is not a requirement to participate. Prospective singing members will have the opportunity to demonstrate sight-reading skills during their audition, but this is not a requirement. PGMC provides support to non-music readers through the use of practice tracks and sectionals to help learn music.
Are the singers professional?
All of the singers in the Chorus are volunteers and receive no compensation for their participation. The members come from all professions and walks of life – lawyers, bankers, salespeople, teachers, physicians, administrators, computer programmers, hairstylists, and students. Some members have received professional music training and some work professionally in music education, but the majority of singers are “avocational,” i.e. they sing as a hobby.
How big is the Chorus?
Currently, the Chorus has about 150 singing members and 25 non-singing members.
Do you accept donations?
Gladly! PGMC is a nonprofit arts organization under section 501(c)(3) of the I.R.S. code, which means that donations are tax-deductible. Programs exist for donating cash or services to the organization. In addition, many companies will match members’ donations.
